About Power BI
Power BI is Microsoft's BI platform for reports and dashboards built on DAX semantic models. Its AI layer is Copilot, which requires Microsoft Fabric capacity. A solid reporting tool, but not an analytics agent.
Why choose nao over Power BI?
- A real analytics agent, not a chat assistant bolted onto reports
- Built-in evaluation and observability so the data team can trust every answer
- Works directly on your warehouse and dbt, no DAX semantic model required
Our review of Power BI agent
Power BI's AI is really just Copilot. There is no evaluation framework, no observability on AI answers, and the Power BI MCP is useless for building anything: we could not create a dashboard with it. If you want an agent that turns questions into charts your data team can trust, Power BI does not get you there.

Frequently asked questions
What AI features does Power BI have?
Essentially Copilot: a chat assistant that answers questions and drafts summaries on top of Power BI semantic models, running on Microsoft Fabric capacity. There is no evaluation framework to measure answer quality and no observability for the data team on what was asked and answered.
Can I build Power BI dashboards with an AI agent through MCP?
Not in practice. In our testing, the Power BI MCP is not usable to create dashboards or reports: you cannot go from a question to a dashboard through it. nao builds live charts and stories from a plain-English question, and exposes them to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor through the nao MCP.
Does Power BI Copilot use my dbt project?
No. Copilot only reads Power BI semantic models (DAX measures, relationships, descriptions). Your dbt documentation and metric definitions have to be rebuilt by hand in the semantic model. nao syncs your dbt project and warehouse metadata directly as agent context.
Can I use nao alongside Power BI?
Yes. Keep Power BI for curated KPI reporting and use nao for every question that falls outside pre-built reports. nao ships a Microsoft Teams bot and supports Microsoft Entra ID SSO, so it fits a Microsoft stack.
