About Tableau
Tableau is a visual analytics platform, now part of Salesforce. It is great for hand-built dashboards, but its AI is limited to authoring helpers and Pulse summaries, with no evaluation and no observability.
Why choose nao over Tableau?
- A real analytics agent, where Tableau has almost no AI
- Built-in evaluation and observability so the data team can trust every answer
- Works directly on your warehouse and dbt, no Tableau data source prep
Our review of Tableau agent
Tableau has no real AI analytics feature. No evaluation, no observability, and the Tableau MCP works badly: building a dashboard with it is painful. Great for pixel-perfect dashboards built by hand, not for letting people ask questions and trust the answer.

Frequently asked questions
Does Tableau have an AI analytics agent?
Not really. Tableau's AI features (Tableau Agent, Pulse) are authoring helpers and metric summaries inside the Salesforce stack, not an agent that answers any question on your data. There is no evaluation framework and no observability for the data team.
Can I build Tableau dashboards with an AI agent through MCP?
Barely. In our testing, the Tableau MCP does not work well: creating dashboards through it is hard and unreliable. nao builds live charts and stories from a plain-English question, and exposes them to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor through the nao MCP.
Does Tableau use my dbt project?
No. Tableau works on its own published data sources. dbt descriptions and metric definitions have to be rebuilt in Tableau. nao syncs your dbt project and warehouse metadata directly as agent context.
Can I use nao alongside Tableau?
Yes. Keep Tableau for polished, curated dashboards and use nao for ad-hoc questions in plain English, from the web, Slack or Microsoft Teams.
